Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco), the nation's leading alumina and aluminum producer, lately lifted the spot price of alumina by 4.35% to CNY 2,400 from CNY 2,300 a ton.
It has been four months since the alumina and aluminum producer raised the spot price from CNY 2,200 to CNY 2,300 per ton on March 31. The latest markup is no surprise for the industry, for the producer has started discussing about the markup since last week.
The markup is partially abscribed to the fact that a large number of domestic electrolytic aluminum factories have resumed production in China. Domestic electrolytic aluminum producers have re-started equipment that once ceased operation since April, and some new electrolytic aluminum production cacity has been under consideration.
From April to now, the resumed electrolytic aluminum production capacity has reached 4 million tons across the country. The capacity in operation has outnumbered 14 million tons, and the capacity is expected to jump further in the future.
