China's refined copper imports increased for three consecutive months and hit a new record in April, while aluminum imports also rose more than fourfold, according to statistics released by the General Administration of Customs.

Imports of refined copper surged 148.9% year on year to 317,947 tons, up 7.1% compared with 296,843 tons in March. In the first four months of this year, imports of refined copper amounted to 1.07 million tons, indicating a year-on-year surge of 106.29%.

Imports of primary aluminum soared 2107.08% from the previous year to 362,400 tons. During the period from January to February, imports of primary aluminum reached 478,155 tons, representing a year-on-year growth of 875.96%.

Even though the market situation is good on the surface, many traders and analysts have said they are concerned that domestic demand is lagging behind surging supply.

Exports of refined copper plunged 99.05% year on year to 179 tons in April, while aluminum declined 97.89% from a year earlier to 118 tons.
