    China April CPI -1.5% on Year

    Consumer prices in China fell 1.5 percent on year in April, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Monday, roughly in line with expectations for a 1.4 percent annual decline after the 1.2 percent fall in March and the 1.6 percent contraction in February.


    Food prices were down 1.3 percent on year, while non-food prices fell an annual 1.5 percent.


    Among the individual components, grain was up 5.5 percent on year, while meat and poultry fell 13.5 percent, eggs added 5.5 percent, fresh vegetables jumped 10.9 percent, fresh fruit gained 0.4 percent, tobacco and alcohol was up 1.6 percent, transportation equipment shed 1.9 percent, vehicle fuel and components lost 6.6 percent, telecommunications equipment fell 18.7 percent and residential water, electricity, fuel eased 2.2 percent.


    In April 2008, inflation was 8.5 percent.


    The bureau also said that producer prices declined 6.6 percent on year in April, falling for the fifth consecutive month. It was more than expectations for a 6.3 percent contraction after the 6 percent annual fall in March and the 4.5 percent decline in February.


    Among the individual components, raw materials, fuel, power were down 9.6 percent, while crude oil plummeted 53.6 percent, gasoline gained 4.6 percent, diesel dropped 11.7 percent, kerosene dumped 32.5 percent, consumer goods eased 1.7 percent, food lost 2.7 percent, crude coal gained 8.9 percent, ferrous metals fell 18.7 percent and nonferrous metals were off 25.7 percent.
