Aluminum Corp. of China, or Chinalco, has promised to save thousands of Australian jobs in a defense of its planned investment in Rio Tinto (RTP), the Australian reported on its Web site Thursday, citing Chinalco Overseas Holdings President Wang Wenfu.

Wang told The Australian that the details of the deal hadn't been well understood, and that the Chinese company had a vested interest in Rio getting a good price for its iron ore, the Web site reported.

"We are committed to delivering the current deal, but we are listening to shareholders and their concerns," the Web site quoted Wang as saying.
