China's steelmakers are abiding by international trade rules and reject charges of dumping, government and industry officials said in comments published Friday, amid brewing tensions over surging U.S. imports of Chinese steel.

American makers of steel pipe used in oil and gas drilling filed complaints with U.S. trade officials earlier this week over alleged unfair competition. The Chinese government has yet to react publicly but indications are that Beijing will back its mostly state-owned manufacturers.

China's government-affiliated steel industry associations will defend domestic producers if the U.S. government launches a probe into whether Chinese mills are dumping steel pipes in the U.S. market, the state-run newspaper China Daily reported Friday, citing an official with the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals and Chemicals Importers and Exporters.

The China Daily report gave only the official's surname, Chen, and said he made the comment Thursday, a day after seven U.S. steel makers and the United Steelworkers union filed petitions with the U.S. Commerce Department and the U.S. International Trade Commission seeking duties on Chinese imports of steel pipe.
