China will produce 12.6 million tonnes of aluminium this year, down 4.4% from 2008, said Luo Jianchuan, president of Aluminium Corp of China (Chalco), the listed arm of China's biggest producer. Demand in the country is likely to fall 1.9% to 12.26 million tonnes for the year, but will be stronger in the second half when stimulus measures take effect and buying is traditionally better, he told a press conference in Shanghai.
Meanwhile, Luo predicts that China's alumina output could dip 5.6% to 21.5 million tonnes in 2009 and demand may stand at 24.3 million tonnes, down 9% from a year ago.
Chalco, which is the listed arm of state-run producer Chinalco, is "mostly" making money on its production based on the existing market prices.
