China plans to designate up to five conglomerates to lead its nonferrous metals industry, as part of the country's draft Nonferrous Metals Industry Revitalization Plan, analysts and local media reports said Monday.

Four of these conglomerates include Aluminum Corp. of China, or Chinalco, China Minmetals Nonferrous Metals Company Ltd., China Nonferrous Metals Mining Co., and China Metallurgical Group Corp. One has yet to be decided.

The plan also advocates strengthening Chinalco and encouraging "restructuring" among major smelters, according to China Business News Monday.

The policy revamp of the nonferrous industry's profile is expected to be officially announced this week, said Yang Changhua, an analyst with state-owned Antaike metals consultancy.

The plan has yet to receive final approval from the State Council, China's equivalent to a cabinet, a top official from the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association said.
