India's state-run National Aluminium Co Ltd (NALCO) <NALU.BO> expects the government to impose a safeguard duty of at least 10 to 15 percent on aluminium coming from China, the company's top official said on Friday.
India's trade secretary, G.K. Pillai, said on Thursday India would impose safeguard duties on Chinese aluminium imports and is probing shipments of other goods, escalating a trade row after China said such moves can hurt bilateral trade ties. "They may fix it at 10 percent, 15 percent or they may fix it higher," C.R. Pradhan, NALCO's chairman, told Reuters by telephone from Bhubaneshwar in the eastern state of Orissa.
China has been a relatively small supplier of aluminium to India, exporting only about 6,000 tonnes of aluminium alloy and 11 tonnes of aluminium last year at a value of just over $15 million, but China's steel mills and aluminium makers rely on India for imported iron ore and alumina.
