The Peninsula reported that up to 65% of construction at the Qatalum aluminium project in Qatar was completed by the end of January 2009, putting the scheme on track to start at the end of the year.

Once phase one is complete it will have an initial annual capacity of 585,000 tonnes of primary aluminium, making it the largest green field aluminium smelter ever built in one step.

Mr Truls Gautesen, CEO of Qatalum said that “The Qatalum project is progressing according to plans and the first aluminium will be produced in the fourth quarter of this year.”

The project will reach its full capacity toward the second half of next year, and has a future expansion plan of up to 1.2 million tonnes in annual capacity.

Mr Gautesen further said that Qatalum products will be exported to other GCC countries, Europe and Asia at competitive prices, even in the current economic climate.

He added that “Qatalum will still have a sound economy with the prices we see today. The project will have positive financial results.”
