Experts forecast that the aluminum price is not as strong as other raw materials, partly because worldwide aluminum producers have less difficulties in increasing aluminum supply. The people who pay a close attention to Alcoa bid 27 billion U.S dollars to purchase its rival Alcan may ignore a potential threat in the global aluminum market: Asia’s growing threat of competition.

It is so in China particularly. China’s aluminum companies are improving smelting capacity quickly. Different from other agricultural and mineral products, china is a net aluminum exporter and may export more aluminum in future. That means, at a minimum, the products of America aluminum and other western enterprises are not necessary to meet the rapidly increased demand. In the worst condition, this may lead to a decline in aluminum price.

The global director in commodities research department of Deutsce Bank Michael Lewis said, “ we think China will be the main risk factor in aluminum market in next year or so.” Even though he thinks with a long-term view aluminum price will maintain relatively high, because the production cost is increasing. He believes that aluminum price will drop in the next two years, but will probably keep a good momentum. Source:
