The independent, statutory, quasi-judicial body of the Republic of Ireland, Bord Pleanála, has given the go-ahead for Russian-owned Aughinish Alumina Limited to expand its bauxite dregs processing area (BRDA) at the Shannon Estuary to continue operations until 2039.
Last year, the alumina refinery formally applied for the permit, despite some objections from local farmers and environmental groups such as the Irish Environment Trust and FutureproofClare.
The BRDA, also known as the Red Mud Pond, currently has a red mud storage capacity in West Limerick until 2030. The new expansion plan will extend the service life of BRDA to 2039, resulting in annual residue deposits of 1 million cubic meters, and is even expected to reach 8 million cubic meters in the future.
The expansion of BRDA also includes increasing the height of the area by 12 meters.
On behalf of the Cappagh Farmers Support Group, Pat Geoghegan opposed the BRDA expansion plan, claiming it "would heighten the potential for environmental catastrophe and put enormous pressure on the existing embankment walls."
The Irish Environment Trust says the expansion of the red mud reservoir will soon spell an environmental disaster.
But Bord Pleanala inspector Paul Caprani believes there is no substantial evidence that BRDA is structurally flawed. He added that, in fact, the evidence before the board suggested that the chances of a breakthrough were very slim or non-existent. Source:
