With the vast majority of Chinese aluminum smelters operating in the red at current prices, meaningful cutbacks are becoming a reality for most producers and more curtailments are likely necessary to combat lagging demand, analysts said.
Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd. (Chalco) said last week that it will cut 18 percent of its total smelting capacity, equivalent to 720,000 tonnes per year. The company's aluminum capacity was about 3.5 million tonnes in 2007, and China's total capacity was around 10 million tonnes, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics.
