    China MLR acts to protect staple ore resources undersupply

    It is reported that China Ministry of Land and Resources recently drafted precept to protect staple ore resources and other rare ore resources that are in short supply.


    According to MLR, on the basis of inland exploitation, China's ore dependency on imported ore shall be controlled at 50% to 70%, especially ore resources like iron, copper and aluminum that are undersupply. The domestic iron ore reserve is 22.364 billion tonnes counted at the end of 2007, and will increase some 7.5 billion tonnes by year 2020. China will consume 16 billion tonnes of steel products or more in the next 13 years.


    The domestic demand for aluminum will be at 13 million tonnes to 14 million tonnes annually by 2020, and is expected to exceed 160 million tonnes accumulated from 2008 to 2020. The alumyte ore reserve was reported to be 750 million tonnes at the end of 2007, which can be totally exploited if the exploration process is strongly supported by necessary funds all along.
