Altech Chemicals is reportedly continuing its research on high purity alumina battery applications with a focus on lithium-ion battery separator technologies and the impact of alumina impurities on battery safety. The research is being performed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems, or IKTS, in Dresden, Germany.

The worldwide popular Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research organisation is specifically working on the contamination that impurities from low-quality alumina may have on the battery electrolyte. The impurities are a cause of lithium battery thermal runaway, and efficiency and life-cycle reduction, according to Altech.

Altech is looking to use this research to target customers for its ultra-pure HPA product, once the Malaysian plant in complete and running. This research is expected to be regarded by German and other European participants as well especially those in the lithium-ion battery chain and the electric mobility sector.

Altech said this week that construction at its Malaysia HPA plant is suspended on account of the movement restriction due to COVID-19 outbreak. Management said the stage two construction work at the electrical sub-station of HPA was nearing completion, prior to the shutdown order.

The plant once complete will be able to produce an alumina product that can achieve 99.99 pre cent purity, according to Altech.

The company also said that none of its finance arrangements were affected by the current coronavirus pandemic. While it has already secured senior debt finance of US$ 190 million from KfW IPEX-Bank, it has Macquarie Bank working on additional mezzanine finance.

Altech is taking some initiatives as well amidst the current uncertain times, such as the European promotion of its HPA project via its alternate director Uwe Ahrens based in Germany.
