Chalco to Cut 18% Electrolytic Aluminum Production Capacity

Aluminum Corporation of China Limited announces on October 23, 2008, that it will cut its production capacity of electrolytic aluminum by 18% from now on.

The aluminum manufacturer notes that branches in Shandong, Henan, Liaoning provinces, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region will limit or partially suspend production, due to sharply diving electrolytic aluminum prices and weakening aluminum demand. As a result, the company's annual production capacity of electrolytic aluminum will reduce by about 720,000 tons.

As early as July 10, 2008, Chalco teamed up with China's top 20 electrolytic aluminum manufacturers, and announced that they would lessen production by 5% to 10% within a month through shutting down plants, postponing operation of new production capacity, and eliminating backward production capacity.

China's production capacity of electrolytic aluminum amounted to around 10 million tons in 2007, including about 3.5 million tons owned by Chalco, so the company's to-be-reduced production only accounts for one tenth of the country's total at most.
