At least eight fire units are tackling a blaze at an industrial site in Taranaki.

The Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said they were alerted by an alarm in the building, on Paraite Rd, at 7.36 pm. The crews have sent out the fifth alarm to make am emergency ring for the crews who are far away as Whanganui has been called to help them out.

Police and an ambulance are also on the scene. There was no report of casualties. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A cordon was set up near the site on the corner of Connett Rd, stopping people going into Paraite Rd. The freight train line running near the site was also closed, with cones placed across the track. About 9.15 pm the cordon was widened.

Some firefighters were seen wearing breathing apparatus while others were seen to put on facemasks.

As per one eyewitness, the smoke appeared to amplify around 8.45 pm.

A fire officer was telling drivers who had parked near the scene to move on because it was "too dangerous".
