Aluminium usage and evocative ride to the post-independence era of Town Hall, Mumbai

Town Hall’s Mumbai outlet owns paradigmatic character and identity which persevere consuming the brand's historic context into a modern set up. Snuggled in a concrete and glass building in a highly commercialized and modern-day Mumbai, the challenges were many in this project for Group DCA, the designers had to traverse the high-rise residential tower classification but still conserved the classic feel of the space.

The name ‘town hall’ already suggests, the complete zone with a high ceiling is developed as a community space to encourage impetuous interaction. Space rejuvenates the magic of the post-independence era. A modern design approach is maintained but with hints of colonial heritage and the industrial spirit.

Cast aluminium columns and French windows, metal lettering and the clock tower signage, the design of the planters and the railing all reinforce an exclusive experience. The semi-circular spatial layout is tied together utilizing cast aluminium columns that bring in the European aesthetic while adding volume and demarcation to space. Plastered walls and pseudo balconies are elements that complete the vintage aesthetic.

The lamp designs were selected to match the outmoded design vocabulary. Applicability and design elements at Town Hall, Mumbai, are all bespoke and custom, in line with the design intent; cast in situ terrazzo floor, cast Aluminum columns, the walls finished in distressed plaster and painted in white and a dark, antique brown colour adds to the antique aesthetic.
