Aluminium scrap exports from US to China extend decline in September by 26% MoM

The United States Geological Survey found incessant drops in America’s aluminium scrap exports to China over the months. As September was not an exception, it saw a decline of 26 per cent month-on-month amounting to 19,600 tonnes. In August 2019, the United States’ aluminium scrap exports to China were 26,500 tonnes after declining by 15.33 per cent from 31,300 tonnes in July. In June, the export volume was 31,800 tonnes, which represents the fact that July saw a drop of 1.57 per cent. This shows the United States aluminium scrap export drop has been growing month on month since July.

Year-on-year, the US aluminium scrap exports to China stood lower by 23.73 per cent in September 2019 from 25,700 tonnes, according to the USGS data. In the total nine months of the year, China secured 300,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the US, down 24.05 per cent from 395,000 tonnes during the same period last year.

After China, Mexico was the next leading destination for the United States aluminium scrap exports in September, the volume totalling at 16,300 tonnes, up 3.82 per cent from 15,700 tonnes in August 2017. In June and July, Mexico imported 13,800 tonnes and 14,900 tonnes, respectively, meaning the US export volume to Mexico is growing consistently over the last four months.
