ASI has certified the BMW Group against ASI Performance Standard. The group achieved Material Stewardship Certification for its light metal foundry at BMW Group plant in Landshut, Germany for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. The plant produces aluminium engine components as well as structural parts for the vehicle body including cylinder heads or crankcases, as well as side members and tailgate frames.

ASI ‘material stewardship’ certification process addresses issues such as product design, life cycle assessments, management of process scrap and collection and recycling of products at end-of-life. The independent, third-party audit of the BMW Group plant was carried out by Bureau Veritas.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “We warmly congratulate BMW, one of ASI’s founding members, on their ASI Certification. The company’s efforts to certify their operations demonstrates the importance of material stewardship practices for the automotive sector in particular, and provides a strong incentive for upstream suppliers to also come on board to ASI’s sustainability-focused program.”

“Sustainability is a key aspect of our corporate strategy. We take our responsibility seriously. Aluminium and other raw materials used by the BMW Group must be extracted and processed under ethically and environmentally responsible conditions,” stated Dr. Andreas Wendt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network.

He reiterated BMW’s support for the ASI certification process since the beginning as a means towards enhancing transparency, traceability and overall sustainability in the aluminium supply chain.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain.
