Reuters reported that China's Hongkong Longquan Aluminum in Henan province and HMHJ Aluminum and Electricity have joined a growing list of smelters reducing output on low prices.

A company official said that Hongkong has shut 40,000 tonnes about 7% of its capacity of 600,000 tonnes. The official sad that "We are trying to slow down blood-shedding, adding the timeframe of the shutdown was uncertain depending on prices.”

A senior executive said HMHJ, majority owned by China Power Investment Corp, has reduced supply of electricity to its production cells, with combined capacity of 300,000 tonnes a year in order to cut aluminium output by 10% to 20%. He said that the firm had also delayed the startup of 150,000 tonnes of new aluminium smelting capacity in Inner Mongolia.

Smelter officials have said more smelters in China may cut production in coming months if prices stay low, with estimates as high 5 million tonnes. The official said currently China has 17 million tonne to 18 million tonnes of capacity up from about 16 million tonnes late last year.
