Factors like limited availability of natural resources, urbanisation, and need for faster execution and changing infrastructure landscape have been continuously influencing the evolution of the construction industry, where aluminium was the key component of the journey.  The trend towards light weight construction has been incessantly increasing the use of aluminium structures and therefore, its export and import across various countries.

Austria is one such country which has been seeing a rise in the import of aluminium structures, according to the global export-import data. Started with a jump from 25,332 tonnes in 2016 to 58,950 tonnes in 2017, Austria’s aluminium structures imports in 2018 saw a further growth to 64,348 tonnes. This year, Austria is expected to import 66,922 tonnes, up 4 per cent from the previous year.

Germany being the primary source, Austria’s import from it has also been rising in tandem with the increase in its total import volume. In 2017, Austria’s aluminium structures import from Germany rose from 8,121 tonnes in 2016 to 18,534 tonnes, while in 2018 to 20,032 tonnes. This year, the volume is likely to grow further to 20,600 tonnes, up almost 3 per cent from the previous year.

The total import cost of Austria’s aluminium structures is also estimated to increase in 2019 from US$320 million in 2018 to US$333 million, and that the cost from Germany to grow to US$132million from US$126 million in the year ago. In 2018, Austria’s aluminium structures import cost from Germany was, however, down from US$132 million in 2017, despite a growth in the total cost from US$306 million in 2017 to US$320 million.

In 2016, Austria’s total aluminium structures import cost and the cost from Germany were at US$133 million and US$60 million, which indicates that they both recorded growth in 2017.
