According to the latest data from China Customs, China’s imports of bauxite increased 14.56 per cent year-on-year to 9.04 million tonnes in August 2019. Imports dropped 6.41 per cent month-on-month as rainy season deterred shipments from Guinea.

Imports of bauxite in the first eight months of 2019 registered 30.5 per cent growth compared with the same period last year. Total imports came in at 75.06 million tonnes in January-August, showed Customs data under HS code 2606000000.

The Republic of Guinea, Australia, and Indonesia remained to be the top three bauxite suppliers to China in August. The three countries together exported about 8.4 million tonnes of bauxite last month.

Guinea, a major source of gibbsite bauxite used in low-temperature production lines, exported about 3.64 million tonnes of bauxite to China last month, a drop of 19.86 per cent month-on-month. Australia’s exports to China stood at 3.63 million tonnes, up 7.92 per cent.

Bauxite imports from Indonesia in August fell 13.73 per cent from July to 1.13 million tonnes in August.

China imported about 150,000 tonnes of bauxite from Malaysia in August, but Shanghai Metals Market expects more Malaysian bauxite to enter China half a year later as the country standardises its export operating procedures.
