Kobelco Aluminum Products & Extrusions Inc. celebrated the commissioning of its Bowling Green facility Wednesday morning, which is expanding its operations. The company is adding an extra melting furnace and extrusion press in the plant, which will double the extrusion production capacity to meet growing demand from automotive customers.
“We’re growing our business and enhancing our presence as a manufacturer of aluminium extruded parts for cars,” said Yukimasa Miyashita, senior managing executive officer and head of the Aluminum & Copper Business of Kobe Steel.
He also added that with their automotive expansions, they would contribute towards meeting the need for lightweight cars that adhere to stricter fuel efficiency regulations, while contributing to the growth of the local economy. This expansion leverages on the growing demand for aluminium automotive parts from the carmakers.
“Kobelco has been a strong employer in Bowling Green for a number of years,” Gov. Matt Bevin said. “This new facility and its ongoing expansion are further evidence that their partnership with Kentucky continues to be a great fit, and we look forward to even more growth in the future.”
The growing aluminium demand from the auto industry and Kobelco’s contribution towards vehicle “light-weighting” were highlighted by the guests.
“South Central Kentucky’s aluminium industry is thriving and Kobelco has taken advantage of this growth, capitalizing on the opportunities provided here,” said Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson.
Chamber President and CEO Ron Bunch appreciated Kobelco’s role in creating 90 full-time jobs with its investment in Bowling Green.
Kobelco is the U.S. subsidiary of Kobe Steel Ltd. from Japan.
