Spain estimated to continue to import more than half of aluminium structures from China in 2019

Aluminium is recognized as one of the most energy-efficient and sustainable construction materials and thus its use is noticeably rising in the buildings and construction sector with each passing year. Also, the applications of the metal have been widened from decorative detailing and art deco structures to major structures of the buildings. As a result, the exports and imports of aluminium structures are increasing all over the world.

Here we will analyse the growth of aluminium structures import into Spain. According to the internal export-import data, the country is estimated to import around 41,544 tonnes of aluminium structures this year, compared to 38,476 tonnes in 2018. This indicates a year-on-year growth of 8 per cent in Spain’s aluminium structures import in 2019. China, being the leading supplier of aluminium structures to Spain, is expected to account for more than half of Spain’s total aluminium structures import, amounting 29,790 tonnes. In 2018, China provided around 28,023 tonnes of aluminium structures to Spain, which represents a potential growth of 6.30 per cent in Spain's import from China in 2019.

As the above graph shows, Spain’s total aluminium structures import in 2017 was at 39,117 tonnes and particularly from China 29,789 tonnes. This shows that 2018 saw a dip in the country’s aluminium structures imports by 1.63 per cent from all over the globe and 6 per cent from China.

In tandem with the growth in Spain’s import volume from all over the world as well as China, the country’s import cost is likely to rise in 2019 by 8 per cent to US$ 107 million and 8.1 per cent to US$53 million, respectively. In 2018, Spain’s total import cost stood down by 4 per cent to US$99 million and that from China by14 per cent to US$49 million, compared to US$103 million and US$57 million in 2017 respectively, as a result of the decline in import volume.

After China, Germany and Italy are estimated to be the next two important suppliers of aluminium structures to Spain, providing 3,707 tonnes and 2,043 tonnes, respectively.
