According to a recent report, the United States Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public opinion on the clean-up of an old aluminium smelting site in Benton Harbor.
“Benton Harbor is becoming a boom town again and the more contributing parties we can get together to clean up toxic land they can make available to the community it’s incredible,” said Benton Harbor resident Mr. Michael Hoyh.
As per the report, the EPA proposed settlement of more than half a million dollar for cleanup of the aluminium smelting site., The settlement requires settling parties Louis Padnos Iron & Metal Company, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc., and Service Aluminium Corporation to pay $585,570.40 to the Hazardous Substance Superfund for the recovery of the EPA’s past response costs.
The EPA finished the cleanup of the Alreco Metals site in 2015. Alreco Metals site in Benton Harbor was in operation for 43 years before the owner filed for bankruptcy in 2008.
The Agency said that while assessing the site they found large piles of aluminium dross. They also said that the actions taken by them so far included implanting health and safety air monitoring programmes along with decontaminating contaminated structures.
The EPA will receive public input for 30 days following the publication of the notice, August 27th to September 26th.
