National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco) aims at doubling its production within the next seven years to become one of the global leaders in alumina production. Such was the message from Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand, Nalco’s Chairman and Managing Director, on Thursday, August 22.

Mr. Chand said the company’s target is to achieve 1.1 billion tonnes of production capacity by 2026. 4.6 million tonnes is its present capacity.

Mr. Chand visited the Sri Gurudev Charitable Trust in Mangalampalem, near Kothavalasa of Vizianagaram district, where while speaking to the reporters also said the company registered a turnover of INR 11,386 crore in the financial year 2018-19 and earned a profit of INR 1,732 crore.

“In spite of challenges facing the economy, NALCO continues to perform well with the concerted efforts of the entire team. That is why it could perform well in the international market. Its listing on the London Metal Exchange indicates its performance in the global market,” Mr. Chand said.

Nalco in 2018 became the lowest cost producer of bauxite in the world, according to a report of Wood Mackenzie, a research and consultancy group. Nalco’s export earnings accounted for about 43 per cent of the total sales turnover. It has been giving top priority to capacity utilisation and technology absorption in all of its units, while concentrating on renewable energy by establishing solar and power units in Odisha and other places, said Chand further.
