Aluminum producer Hydro now supplies ASI-certified sustainable aluminium for the battery housing of the first fully electric SUV of Audi called Audi e-tron
The aluminium component is processed and manufactured in an environmentally friendly manner and under socially acceptable working conditions. This has been certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) with a “chain of custody” certificate. Audi also had a certificate from ASI for the sustainable assembly of these aluminium components in October 2018. This ensures that the aluminium sheets processed in the battery housing of the Audi e-tron are now completely certified for sustainability along the complete supply chain.
Both the partners have kept a strict target of reducing CO2 emissions from the use of aluminium along the entire value chain. Audi has kept a target of reducing CO2 footprint of its products by about 30 per cent by 2025.
“We want to offer our customers completely CO2‑neutral mobility by 2050 at the latest. To do that, we need a sustainable supply chain,” says Dr. Bernd Martens, Audi Board of Management Member for Procurement and IT.
Audi started a CO2 program in procurement in 2018 and has been doing more than 20 CO2 workshops with its aluminium suppliers.
Hydro is one of the first aluminium producers to supply ASI certified aluminium sheet.
“We are very proud to supply ASI-certified metal, especially for the Audi e-tron, one of Audi’s flagships. We are constantly working on reducing our impact and that of our customers on the environment,” says Einar Glomnes, Executive Vice President at Hydro.
They considered it a significant milestone towards helping their customers offer aluminium products that are produced and procured responsibly.
