Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre Tadweer has reportedly acknowledged four companies that annually generate over 250 tonnes of waste in a bid minimise waste production at source.

One of the honorees is Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) that has developed a successful and cost-effective waste recycling model. Since 2010, EGA is in collaboration with the UAE-based leading cement manufacturers to reutilise spent pot lining, a major waste stream of aluminium smelting.

In 2018, EGA provided cement companies with more than 41,000 tonnes of spent pot lining for use as an alternative fuel and raw material. Use of SPL as an alternative feedstock reduced CO2 emissions from cement manufacturing. Overall, last year EGA had achieved a 15 per cent reduction in waste generation, while its recycling increased from 96,000 tonnes in 2017 to 102,000 tonnes. It also diverted 34 percent more of waste from landfill compared to 2017.

H.E. Dr. Salem Al Kaabi, the General Manager of Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center -Tadweer, said: “This initiative aligns with Tadweer’s plan to address the continued rise in waste production due to rapid population growth and urban expansion in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Achieving our key objective of minimizing waste at source, while mitigating pollution and other adverse environmental impacts of waste production requires collective efforts at all levels.”

Other entities that have received acknowledgement from Tadweer include Al Diar Dana Hotel, NMC Specialty Hospital, and Agility Engineering & Contracting Company.
