Trump Trade War - CAFTA pleased with removal of tariffs

The Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance is pleased to see that the US removed its steel and aluminum tariffs against Canada. CAFTA President Brian Innes said “On behalf of our members, we congratulate both sides for this positive development. We are pleased that the US is removing these punitive tariffs and that Canada will also remove its retaliatory duties. This is good news for free trade in North America. Duty-free trade is a win-win across leading sectors of the economy, including manufacturing and of course agriculture and agri-food. Canada’s agri-food exports to the US have grown by more than fivefold and imports from the US have grown more than six fold since 1988. Tariff-free trade has been an incredible success for the agri-food sector throughout North America."

Innes notes removing uncertainty will benefit the millions of businesses, workers and exporters who rely on free and open trade. CAFTA says the announcement will help ensure the stability of trade in North America.

He added “We are hopeful this agreement paves the way for the ratification of the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) which will create even greater opportunities across the North American market.”
