According to the latest report from US Geological Survey, US primary aluminium production in January 2019 was 95,000 tonnes. The average daily production in January 2019 was 3,050 tonne, essentially unchanged from that in December 2018. However, the production registered a 43% increase from January 2018 and 52% more than January 2017. At this current rate, US aluminium production is likely to cross one million tonne in 2019.

The aluminium sector continued to recover a large volume of scraps. Total aluminium recovered from scrap in January 2019 was 290,000 tonnes, unchanged from the previous month. However, the amount drops 6% YoY, indicating a drop in domestic recycling. Of this, 172,000 tonnes of aluminium was recovered from new scrap and 118,000 tonne was recovered from old scrap.

The average U.S. market price of primary aluminium ingot in January decreased slightly from that in December 2018 to about US$2271 per tonne. The average LME cash price of primary aluminium ingot in January dropped by 4% from that in December 2018 to US$1845 per tonne.

Inventories of primary aluminium in LME-approved warehouses in the US dropped to 48,225 tonnes at the end of January 2019 from 53,050 tonnes at the end of December 2018 indicating strong demand. Inventories of secondary aluminium (North American Secondary Aluminum Alloy Contract) also dropped to 126,340 t at the end of January 2019 from 133,200 t at the end of December 2018.
