Alcan Inc, the supporter of Alcoa Inc to purchase Alcan, may neglect a potential existing proble, in world aluminum market: the growing threat of competition from other regions, especially from Asia.
The prospect of aluminum price is not as strong as other raw materials. One of the reasons is that the global producers can be relatively easy to develop new supply.
This is particularly prominent in China. The aluminum companies in China have always been increasing the refining capacity. Different from other raw materials, aluminum may be exported more in the following years, since China is a net exporter of aluminum.
Michael Lewis, who is responsible for global commodity market of Deutsche Bank in London, said that they believed that in the next one year or so, China was the main risk factor in aluminum market. But they thought that because of increased costs, aluminum price would be at a higher position fro a long time.
This doesn’t mean that the prospect of aluminum in the United States needs to be worried. Many analysts and shareholders appreciate this acquisition plan, one reason attributing to which is that this will enable Alcoa to increase the competitive strength again overseas new rivals. Source:
