According to Shanghai Metals Market, China’s total alumina production in December came in at 6.18 million tonnes, a growth by 11.22% from a year ago. The average daily output stood at 199,000 tonnes, from 203,000 tonnes in November.
In 2018, China's alumina production totalled 70.48 million tonnes, 3.01% higher than the same period last year.
Tight supplies of natural gas in the heating season affected production across northern alumina producers. Air pollution warnings across Henan province and environmental curbs in Shanxi province affected alumina production in December. Maintenance on roasting furnaces at some south-western mills also accounted for the decrease.
This, together with renovation on generators at some mills, is estimated to affect alumina capacity by 800,000 tonnes for three months, SMM learned.
SMM expects average daily output of alumina to increase to 200,000 tonnes in January as environmental rectifications across alumina refineries in Shanxi are completed. Output of alumina is expected to stand at 6.2 million tonnes, up 0.36% month on month and 8.58% year on year.
