    North America’s aluminium demand up 3% through Q3 2018 over YTD 2017

    Preliminary estimates from Aluminum Association indicate that aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) stood at an estimated 9.6 million tonnes through September 2018, up 3% over the same period of 2017. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products was up 2.8 % to 7 million tonnes.

    Apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets was up 1.4% YoY to about 8.5 million tonnes. Exports of aluminium ingots and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) were up 16% over YTD 2017 to 1.2 million tonnes through Q3 2018. Imports were down 6.4% to 3 million tonnes.

    The Aluminum Association, in cooperation with the Aluminium Association of Canada, reported primary aluminium production in North America (U.S. and Canada) was at an annual rate of 3,909,503 tonnes during October 2018, up about 2% over the September 2018 rate of 3,813,539 tonnes. The aluminium production rate in the U.S. was up 7.7%. YoY the North American annual rate was 1% below the October 2017 rate. Actual production in October 2018 totaled 332,040 tonnes.

    Demand for aluminium semi-fabricated or mill products in North America (measured in shipments by domestic producers plus imports) was up 4.8% YoY to an estimated 752,510 tonnes in September. Shipments of aluminium sheet and plate increased 6.4% to 416,398 million pounds. Extruded product shipments increased 1.8% YoY to 220,446 tonnes. Estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses increased 7.4% to 322,504 million pounds in September.

    Apparent consumption of mill products in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets was up 5.6% to 948,462 tonnes in September. Producer inventories were up 11% YoY to 1.6 million tonnes in September.
