After a sweeping rise last year, Mexico’s aluminium scrap import is likely to see a plunge in 2018 from 317,561 tonnes to 266,558 tonnes, found the global export-import data. This marks a drop by around 16 per cent year-on-year. In contrast to this, Mexico’s aluminium scrap import had increased by almost 192 per cent in 2017 from 108,660 tonnes in 2016 to 317,561 tonnes.

But despite a drop in volume in 2018, Mexico’s aluminium scrap import cost is estimated to stand higher at US$ 188 million compared to US$ 150 million in 2017. This marks a surge by 25 per cent year-on-year. The year 2017 had also seen a growth in Mexico’s aluminium scrap import cost but lesser than that of 2018. It had increased by 1.3 per cent to stand at US$ 150 million from US$ 148 million in 2016.

However, the quarter-on-quarter data shows a different picture because, in Q1 2018, Mexico’s aluminium scrap import stood higher at 28,416 tonnes compared to 23,899 tonnes in Q1 2017. This means the import volume increased by almost 19 per cent in Q1 this year, global export-import data learned. The import volume in Q1 2017 rather stood lower than the same period of 2016, unlike the year-on-year data. In Q1 2016, Mexico’s aluminium scrap import volume was at 30,117 tonnes, 26 per cent higher from 23,899 tonnes in Q1 2017.

Consequently, the import cost in Q1 2018 stood higher at US$ 42 million than US$ 34 million in Q1 2017. The import cost of Q1 2017 was also lower from that of US$ 38 million in the same period of 2016.

The United States was the highest exporter of scrap to Mexico in the first quarter of all three years. In Q1 2018, the US exported 27, 453 tonnes at the cost of US$ 40 million while in Q1 2017 and 2016, the country exported 21, 746 tonnes and 26,244 tonnes at the prices of US$ 31 million and US$ 33 million, respectively.
