United Wagon Co. in Russia has obtained certification for its Type 19-9549-02 grain hopper wagon. This particular wagon uses high-strength aluminium alloy in its roof, which cuts its weight by more than 1 tonne in comparison to the steel model. It also offers corrosion resistance and increases the load capacity of the wagon.

This aluminium alloy design increases the capacity of the 25 tonne axle load wagon to 77 tonnes or 120 m3. This will provide an efficient transport medium for lightweight food grade products including meal and pressed seed cake.

Arconic Russia’s BobTail clamping bolts are used to attach the aluminium roof to the steel body of the wagon, which are immune to high levels of vibration. United Wagon Co. and Arconic Russia are also working on an aluminium tank wagon design.

‘The improved technical and economic characteristics of the wagons make it possible to carry more cargo at a lower cost’, explained Kirill Kyakk, CEO of UWC’s All-Union Research & Development Centre for Transportation Technology. ‘This is achieved not only by optimising the design and improving individual systems, but also by the use of modern materials.’

Maxim Smirnov, President of Arconic Russia said that they have created an economically sustainable and effective alternative to the conventional hopper. They also emphasised that this project underlines their strategy of promoting the use of aluminium in new industrial segments and supporting the growth of the Russian aluminium industry.
