Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), one of the world’s leading primary aluminium producers, announced on Thursday, February 2, that the company had completed preliminary work on bauxite mining project in Guinea. EGA already has spent US$1 billion in the development of a bauxite mine.
Yousuf Bastaki, EGA’s executive vice president upstream, said, “This early milestone shows good progress in our Guinea project, which will boost Guinea’s economy, create value for EGA, and secure the supply of natural resources that we need.”
Jan de Nul, a Belgian marine contractor that also worked on the construction of the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, completed a site infill and elevation of 50 hectares of land at Kamsar for the development of rail infrastructure and export facilities for the bauxite mining project, according to company.
The container terminal facility at Kamsar port is being used for exporting bauxite and the import of equipment for EGA’s construction project. EGA has exported its first bauxite sample shipment of 55,000 tons to China in December.
The EGA is expected to start full-fledged commercial bauxite production from 2018. The company will increase its bauxite production to 12 million tonnes per year.
EGA is also developing a $3bn alumina refinery in the UAE as a boom in regional infrastructure projects spurs demand for alumina. The alumina refinery will start its production by next year.
Guinea has around 7 billion tonnes of bauxite resources, over a quarter of the global total.
