Aluminium manufacturing market in Turkey is growing at a moderately steady pace. A recent market research report by Technavio suggests the market will grow at a CAGR of about 4 per cent until 2020. The demand for aluminium in the domestic building and construction sector is seen as a major growth driver for this market. Earlier, the market was focusing mainly on the exports of downstream aluminium products, since domestic demand was low. Aluminium extrusion and flat-rolled aluminium product manufacturers would produce over 900,000 tonnes of products in a year to supply to the global companies operating in construction, automotive, and packaging sectors. However, with demand rising in the domestic market, the export volumes of these products have come down marking a year-over-year decline of 7 per cent (approximately) over the last three years.

Aluminium structure exports by Turkey decline 7% YoY as domestic demand surges higher

In 2014, Turkey exported 49,699.5 tonnes of aluminium structures which shrank 7.5 per cent to stand at 45,965.3 tonnes in 2015. In 2016, the volume further declined to reach 42,704.4 tonnes, down 7.09 per cent YoY. In 2017, till October, the country is estimated to ship approximately 35,393.9 tonnes of aluminium structures, marginally down by 0.73 per cent from the corresponding period previous year.

Earnings from the exports of aluminium structures by Turkey has also declined since 2014. Three years ago, the country shipped aluminium structures worth US$303.06 million, which came down to US$254.52 million in 2015. In 2016, total export value of aluminium structures from Turkey stood at US$236.47 million, down 7.09 per cent from the previous year. In 2017, till October, Turkey is estimated ship aluminium structures worth US$184.07 million, again marking a decrease of 7.5 per cent from the same period last year.

The top destinations of Turkey's aluminium structure exports in 2016 were Belgium, Austria, Algeria, Germany, and the UK. The key manufacturers in the domestic industry were Teknik Aluminium, Assan Aluminum, Arslan Aluminyum, Altim Aluminyum, Burak Aluminyum, and Tuna Aluminium.

The Turkish aluminium manufacturing market is opening up. The industry presently comprises over 1500 companies. Key consuming industries such as automotive, construction, packaging and electric household devices are creating fresh demand for domestic aluminium finished and semi-finished products, which will result in further decline of exports to the world market.
