The report says, as of January 2016, global bauxite reserves were 27.5 billion tonnes and Guinea had about 7.4 billion tonnes of the total reserve, accounting for 26.9% of the same and claiming the largest reserve in the world. Australia had the second largest bauxite reserves at 6.2B 5 billion tons with the highest grade bauxite reserves located in Queensland and the Northern Territory. Brazil ranked third with 2.6Bnt of bauxite reserves, of which around 80% are located in the Trombetas region.
The report says that global bauxite ore production dropped 0.3% YOY to 279.7 million tonnes (Mt) in 2015 due to a drop in production from Brazilian, Malaysian and Chinese bauxite ore mines.
Global bauxite production also dropped 5.2% to 280.6 million tonnes in 2014 in comparison to 2013 due to production drop in Indonesia. The country produced just 500kt in 2014, against 55.7Mt in 2013 as a result of the ban on the exports of mineral ores imposed in January 2014.
