The Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation (CMDC) is poised to start bauxite mining in Narmadapur and Barima blocks in Surguja division of the state. The bauxite mining blocks at Narmadapur and Barima blocks are spread over in areas of 47.81 hectares and 54.26 hectares, informed CMDC officials.
During the monsoon session in July this year, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh had informed the state Assembly that bauxite deposits have been unearthed in Jashpur district as well. Earlier it was claimed by certain political party leaders that there were substantial indication of limestone deposits existing in the same region of the state.
As per the annual report of India’s Union Ministry of Mines, the eastern mineral-rich state accounted for 6.07 per cent of the total bauxite production in the country in 2013-14. Gujarat accounted for the maximum 32.41 per cent share in India’s total bauxite production followed by Jharkhand’s 10.53 per cent share and Maharashtra’s 9.51 per cent share. The remaining bauxite output was reported from the states like Goa, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the report stated.
According to the last available update, the value-wise market size of minerals resources in India, excluding atomic and minor minerals, during June 2015 was INR 18194 crore. Among the states which have indicated an increase in the value of mineral production, Chhattisgarh’s contribution was 0.7 per cent.
