PT Shaanxi Youser Indonesia, a part of the Shaanxi Youser Group is planning to construct an alumina refinery in East Kotawaringin district, Central Kalimantan in collaboration with a Chinese investor. The Chinese firm is ready to build the refinery at a cost of Rp16 trillion.

"We want to build it next year but it will take at least two to three years in Indonesia. In China, it can be built in one year because they (Chinese workers) are ready to work nonstop," Director of PT Shaanxi Youser Indonesia, Steven Ugo, said in Malaysia on Thursday October 20.

The company’s executive board also visited the Kotawaringin district capital of Sampit to inspect the site and to understand the relevance of building an alumina refinery in the district.

As a standard, Indonesian bauxite is of good quality. The quality of bauxite mined in East Kotawaringin district is of very high quality and the 500 hectares of land where the proposed refinery can be built is close to the riverside and perfect for transportation. These are the factors that have raised the interest of the company to invest in the alumina refinery in the proposed site.

He also pointed out the constructing an alumina refinery in the area will improve the local economy and lifestyle. The company assured of hiring local workers for the construction and also promised to facilitate training so that they can be employed in the plant.

The company said that as they faced difficulty in acquiring land for building the refinery, the project got delayed than they actually planned.

"We are not doubtful. The obstacle may have to do with land prices, but we remain optimistic," he said, stressing on its intention of going ahead with the project.
