According to the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp., average shipping this season on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system dropped from the last season, although recent shipments of aluminium, grain and iron ore boosted the sea traffic in September.

YTD cargo shipments for the period of March 21 to Sept. 30 were 21 million metric tons, which recorded a 5.3 per cent drop from the same period in 2015.

She pointed out that there were notable shipments of aluminium and project cargo consisting of various equipment used in aluminium plants including crane components, machinery and transformers. Increase in aluminium cargo shipments from the Port of Oswego was to a certain extent due to the demand from the Novelis plant in Oswego that supplies to the automotive sector.  The port saw a rebound in shipment from Quebec to Novelis’s plant.

“In addition to our aluminium shipments, the grain harvest is promising to be positive for export of soybeans to Asia,” Zelko Kirincich, executive director of the Port of Oswego, said.
