Evidencing a corporate commitment to the future of the global aluminium industry, coupled with pro-active support for knowledge-sharing, benchmarking and collaborative solutions to sector-wide challenges, Emirates Global Aluminium (“EGA”) again participated at the 31st Metal Bulletin International Aluminium Conference, held in Spain during September. EGA was the event’s Platinum Sponsor for the second consecutive year, cementing a long-standing involvement that has included EGA hosting the 2007 and 2014 events in Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively.

Dr Ali Al Zarouni (Executive Vice President Midstream at EGA) participated in an executive industry panel alongside other senior aluminium experts. The topics addressed included the impact of politics, economics and demographics; the impact of the slowdown in China on global aluminium demand growth; the prevailing low aluminium price; the challenges posed by raw materials, energy and other inputs; the aluminium industry’s approach to sustainability, resources stewardship and the environment; maintaining momentum in innovation and R&D despite tight budgets; and more.

Having spent 25 years at EGA, leading Reduction operations and Technology Development & Transfer, Dr Al Zarouni has a wealth of knowledge and insight. Commenting on EGA’s development of advanced, high amperage reduction technologies that produce more metal with less energy and thus reduced environmental impact, he said, “EGA strives for continuous improvement and innovation with the overall aim of increased operating efficiency, enhanced productivity, a safer workplace, optimised raw material consumption and minimum emissions. We not only operate according to sustainability principles but also strive to find better ways for the benefit of the business, our stakeholders and the world – and this includes identifying opportunities to work smarter and achieve more, regardless of any economic constraints.”

With a hot metal production capacity in excess of 2.4 Mtpa (about 4.3 per cent of the global total), EGA ranks among the world’s largest primary aluminium producers. The business also ranks among the industry’s leaders in terms of operating parameters and environmental performance; and is an acclaimed technology developer and provider. “This year’s Metal Bulletin International Aluminium Conference again provided opportunities for us to showcase the leadership and business excellence for which EGA is renowned; as well as to continue building trust-based relationships with customers, suppliers and other partners,” said Dr Al Zarouni. “Our participation at events like this is one of the many ways we demonstrate the seriousness of our commitment to create a legacy for our people, our nation and the world.”
