Indian aluminium industry has enough scope for improvement in energy consumption- Mines Secretary at IBAAS 2016

The 5th International Bauxite, Alumina & Aluminium Society (IBAAS) Symposium- 2016 opened its doors to the domestic and international delegates at Radison Blu Hotel & Resort in South Goa, India today and the conference will host delegates from international and domestic aluminium industry at the venue from 26-28 September 2016.

The title of this year’s IBAAS-2016 symposium is “Aluminium Industry-The Evolving Asia-Pacific Story”. Leading experts from the domestic and international aluminium industry would be presenting their views on the steadily growing aluminium industry in Asia pacific and India.

The event coincides with a one-day theme symposium on “Energy Reduction in Aluminium Smelting”, jointly organized with The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM). Considering the energy intensive nature of the industry, this theme symposium is expected to open up innovative ideas and technical solutions for energy management in the aluminium industry.

The inaugural session is graced by the presence of some of the big names from the metal and mining sector and the aluminium industry in India in particular. The session sees the address and IBAAS introduction by IBAAS convenor Dr. Ashok Nandi followed by the addresses of Mr. Abhijit Pati Vedanta, Dr. Biswajit Basu, Aditya Birla Group & VP (Non Ferrous) and Dr Anupam Agnihotri, Director, JNARDDC.  This is to be followed by key note address by Dr. T.K. Chand, CMD, NALCO and address by Dr. I .Manna, President, IIM &Director, IIT, Kanpur.

In his inaugural address, Chief Guest – Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India, Balvinder Kumar has highlighted the importance of the aluminium industry in Indian perspective, its scope for development and what is government’s perspective towards the growth of the industry. He has also highlighted the significance of energy in the aluminium industry in general. The fact that forty per cent of the cost of production for aluminium is allotted to energy costs, enhanced R&D initiative and their applications in the field of energy reduction is urgently called for. He feels that India has enough scope for improvement in the field of energy consumption of the aluminium industry.

The first day will see a number of important technical papers to be presented by top executives from Vedanta, Hindalco, Balco, JNARDDC, Rio Tinto, GAMI & CHALCO, Altech Chemicals, Almatis Alumina Pvt. Ltd. etc.
