China to cut aluminum production

China's top 20 primary aluminum producers will cut their annual production by 350,000 tonnes as the government struggles to deal with power shortages. The cut equals about 2.8 per cent of China's annual aluminum output of 12.5 million tonnes.

Production of alumina, the intermediate material for smelting aluminum and a big energy user, is also being reduced. The move may boost Western aluminum exports to China, analysts said.
