Dajcor Aluminum plans C$10 mln expansion

Ontario’s Dajcor Aluminum Ltd. is planning a C$10 million expansion to its plant in Chatham. The expansion is expected to lead to the addition of 35 new positions at the plant.

The firm is receiving governmental aid in the form of a C$1 million from the province’s Southwestern Ontario Development Fund. According to Dajcor, the expansion will include upgraded state-of-the-art fabrication equipment, increasing capacity and efficiency. The expansion is expected to be complete by 2018. At present the firm’s plant has two presses: a 9″ 2800 ton press capable of up to 11″ CCD, and a 7″ 1650 ton press.

According to press reports, Dajcor is considering branching out into new areas, including transit door assemblies, ventilation systems, LED light enclosures, and high-end furniture.

Dajcor Aluminum Ltd. is an ISO 9001: 2008 certified supplier of extruded, fabricated/machined, and anodized aluminium components and assemblies to various markets: automotive, renewable energy, medical equipment, transportation, building trades, military, recreation, and consumer-product industries. The firm began in 2010 when three Chatham businessmen purchased the assets of the now-defunct Daymond Aluminum after the 2008 financial crisis. It extrudes primarily 6000 series alloys, including 6063, 6463, 6061, and 6005 in its 190,000 ft2 plant. At present Dajcor employs 140 people.

The Southwestern Ontario Development Fund is administered by Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Growth. The fund may contribute up to 15 per cent towards a new expansion or innovation project that grows the local economy or the workforce of either an incorporated, for-profit business with 10 employees (5 in small communities), or a not-for-profit organization. Businesses active in advanced manufacturing (automotive, aerospace, plastics, clean technologies), life sciences, primary and secondary processing, tourism, information and communication technologies, or cultural industries are eligible for funding under the program. The fund was patterned after the Eastern Ontario Development Fund. Both programs have together created and/or retained an estimated 44,000 jobs and attracted C$2 billion in investment.
