Secondary recovery in U.S up 4% YTD in H1 2016: USGS

The U.S. aluminium industry purchased an estimated 775 million pounds of aluminium scrap during June 2016, according to aluminium recycling statistics published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of Interior, which recorded a slight increase of seven-tenths of one per cent over the June 2015 total of 769 million.

USGS YTD preliminary data for aluminium recovery for the first half of 2016 indicate an estimated total of 3,892 million pounds, up 3.7 per cent from the 2015 YTD total of 3,751 million. U.S. exports of scrap, not included in the government’s consumption statistics dropped 13 per cent to 1,421 million pounds YTD in comparison to the same period of 2015.

According to USGS aluminium report in June, total aluminium recovery from scrap in June 2016 was 297,000 metric tonnes, essentially the same from the data from the same period of 2015 and in May 2016. Of this total, 171,000 t of aluminium was recovered from new scrap and 126,000 t was recovered from old scrap. These estimates are also unchanged from the preceding month and from June 2015 data.

Total aluminium recovered from scrap in H1 2016 was 1,770,000 t, about 4% more than that recovered in H12015.
