According to the preliminary estimates by Aluminium Association for the month of May 2016, aluminium demand in the United States and Canada which includes shipments by domestic producers plus imports totalled 11,008 million pounds through the first five months of 2016. The estimate records a 1.7 per cent rise over the same period last year.
Demand for semi-fabricated mill products was slightly down at 7,695 million pounds. Apparent consumption that includes demand minus exports in domestic markets was an estimated 9,679 million pounds, a slight rise year-to-date. Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) was 1,329 million pounds through May 2016, up 14.6 per cent over the same period last year. The worrying component here is that the imports of aluminium ingot and mill products were up 12.6 per cent to 2,944 million pounds in the same periods. This indicates an increase in Chinese export to North America.
As for the data for the month of May, aluminum semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada (measured in shipments by domestic producers plus imports) reported a drop of 1% from May 2015 at 1,575 million pounds. Demand for aluminum sheet and plate was 863 million pounds in May, down 2.5 percent. Extruded products were up 2.1 percent YoY to 474 million pounds.
Estimated shipments of aluminum ingot for castings, exports and other uses totaled 687 million pounds, up 14.8 percent YoY. Apparent consumption in domestic U.S. and Canada markets totaled 1,953 million pounds in May, a slight drop from May 2015 total of 1,956 million pounds.
