Aleris has enetred into a new multi-year contract with Airbus to supply a range of aluminium products such as plate and sheet for use in the making of all Airbus aircrafts. The contract, to be effective from 2017 onward, also includes the supply of high-end wing skin material by Aleris.
Aleris has had a a long-standing partnership with Airbus. This agreement further strengthens that relationship and demonstrates how successfully Aleris continues to meet the expectations as a strategic technology-cum-material supplier to the flourishing aerospace industry.
"This vote of confidence from Airbus validates our strategy to expand our global rolled products footprint and invest in technology as we are now able to extend our range of aerospace products and better serve Airbus," says Sean Stack, President & CEO Aleris. "With world class facilities strategically positioned in Koblenz, Germany and Zhenjiang, China we are in a strong position to support the significant growth projected in the aerospace industry, particularly in the Asia Pacific region."
The contract not only includes the supply of aluminium plate and sheet critical for the manufacturing of aircraft fuselage and wing structures, but also the supply of wing skins – a highly specialized product that requires additional precision, processing and pre-machining. Aleris will be supplying the material from their facilities in Koblenz, Germany and Zhenjiang, China, the latter of which represents a $350 Million greenfield project for the company. In 2015, Airbus had qualified this facility for the production of aerospace material.
According to Flight Ascend Consultancy's forecast, the world's total fleet of commercial aircraft is expected to increase by 81 per cent to 49,940 aircraft in 2035, by which time 41 per cent of the fleet is expected to be operating in Asia Pacific and China. Passenger traffic will also likely grow at a higher-than-average rate in this region driving industry growth and new aircraft demand over the next 20 years.
