In a bid to reduce the amount of metal packaging sent to landfill, MetalMatters campaign supported by Rexam targets 79,355 households. It includes a series of leaflets, online advertising, social media posts and posters have been developed carrying the ‘make your metals matter’ messaging to educate residents on the recycling process. Two infographics will be released in May and July, illustrating metal items suitable for recycling and showcasing the infinite recyclability of aluminium.

Alex Constantinides, service director public realm at Luton Borough Council, said: “We’re committed to reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill and look forward to working with residents to make this happen. If all 94 million aluminium cans and other metal packaging were recycled, it would equate to 542 cars being taken off the road for one year and a saving of 2,548 units of CO2 – which is huge!”

Matthew Rowland-Jones, sustainability manager, Rexam, added: “We’ve been supporting MetalMatters since its inception in 2010 as part of our commitment to raise awareness of the importance of recycling. We’re thrilled to see it being launched in Luton, home to our European headquarters, and also to see Luton Council encouraging the local community to recycle.”
