    Melbourne : April 19 -- Thursday, listed companies (Rio Tinto Ltd) claimed that because of promotion and expansion of production capacity, the yield of ironstone improved significantly in the first quarter, while the output of  copper  has slipped somewhat.


     The output of ironstone in the first quarter was 32.1 million tons, a 12% increase over the same period in 2006, but a decline of 8% over the fourth quarter of last year.


       Iron ore production for the first quarter of 32.2 million tons, a 12% increase over 06 years earlier. However, 8% decline compared with the fourth quarter of last year.


    On the same period the output of copper in Rio Tinto Ltd was 197,900 tons, a decline of 3% over the same period of last year, while the output of refined copper was 101,600 tons, an increase of 19% year-on-year.


    The company said that in the first quarter the output of aluminum increased by 2% to 211,700 tons, while the output of alumina declined by 15% because of the sale of Italy Eurallumina smelting.
